A sunny evening during the heart of spring at a nature reserve made for a perfect time to shoot Cinestill 35mm film.
My Cousin, Marley, reached out a few weeks ago about taking her senior pictures because she is graduating with her bachelor’s degree this month. I was super excited immediately of course. First thing we had to get nailed down was what type of film she wanted– which is the most exciting part in my opinion. I had first recommended Kodak Portra 400, as I do for many portraits. But after asking more about what she was looking for, I learned that she wanted some grain in her images.
I have shot with high grain film Cinestill 800t in the past, but that film is made for more low light photography. So this would be a great opportunity to try out Cinestill’s 50 and 400 options. Originally we landed on using Cinestill 400d. After some thought– I decided to add Cinestill 50d into the mix and I am so glad that I did because I was extra pleased with how this roll turned out.
Check out the results below starting with Cinestill 50:
By the time we shot this first roll of Cinestill 50d, the sun was already getting lower than I anticipated. But I am so in love with the way that the green of the trees turned out on this film.
Next we immediately began shooting Cinestill 400d. With the sun getting even lower, we had the opportunity to get a few golden hour shots. Here are the results:
Cinestill 50d and Cinestill 400d have a clear distinctive difference:
These two images were shot within 15 minutes of each other but give such a different result due to the difference in film.
I had so much fun during this photoshoot. I got to try out two new films that I had never gotten the opportunity to use before. Plus, I had an absolutely stunning model who made an amateur film photographer’s job so much easier.
On a more personal note: Marley, I am so proud of your huge accomplishment. I feel so lucky to have a cousin/friend as funny, kind, and energetic as you. I can’t wait to see all you do in the future.
xoxo,
Austin
