Maternity Photos on 35mm Film

Over the past several months I have been in a creative rut. The same roll of Kodak Ektar 100 had been in my camera for far too long. It seems like I am either constantly experiencing a surge of inspiration that pushes me to shoot multiple rolls a month, or I am experiencing no inspiration at all. No in between. Luckily, I got asked to work on a project that pulled me out of this creative rut that at the time seemed to have no end in sight.

A few weeks ago my cousin, Mira, asked if I would take her maternity photos. This is exactly what I needed to get back into one of the things I love doing most, film photography. The last photoshoot I was asked to take was actually for her sister. I wrote about that here. I loved the results of the low ISO film I used on that photoshoot. So for Mira’s maternity shoot, I chose to photograph with Kodak Portra 160. I have used many rolls of Portra 400 in the past but opted for the lower ISO option this time because I have been loving the results of these low number films.

In Iowa, photographing in February can be tricky. The lighting situation will be unpredictable. Almost every tree is naked. And it can be very cold. Luckily, the morning we went with had excellent lighting and here in Iowa we’ve been in a heat wave for weeks. That global warming is really getting scary. Yikes. …Anyways, I figured the best option would be to photograph at our main street that always provides cute options for background. We even managed to shoot with some pine trees to bring some nature into them. Here are the results:

I had so much fun on this photoshoot. And it helped me to get out of the creative rut I was in. I have already been taking lots more pictures since this day and I can’t wait to take more.

MIra– thank you so much for asking me to take these. I am so happy for you and looking forward to meeting the newest addition to the family!

As always,

xoxo Austin
